Six Simple Bricks, Endless Possibilities: My LEGO Serious Play Duck Challenge Experience

Have you ever been handed six colorful LEGO bricks and asked to build a duck? If not, you’re missing out on one of the most delightfully insightful team exercises I’ve experienced recently. This week, I had the pleasure of participating in a workshop organized by The Slovenian Association of Facilitators, where we explored the fascinating world of LEGO Serious Play through the famous Duck Challenge.

What is the Duck Challenge?

The premise is beautifully simple: each participant receives the same six LEGO bricks and is asked to build a duck within a limited timeframe. That’s it. No instructions, no guidelines on what the duck should look like, just six bricks and your imagination.

What emerges from this seemingly straightforward task is nothing short of remarkable.

The Power of Constraints

As I sat there, clicking my six bricks together, I was initially frustrated by the limitations. “How am I supposed to make a recognizable duck with just these?” But that’s precisely the point. The constraint forces creativity, problem-solving, and out-of-the-box thinking.

My creation ended up looking somewhat like a duck but hardly a National Geographic-worthy representation of the species. Yet around me, an astonishing variety of “ducks” took shape. Some were abstract, others surprisingly realistic. Some stood tall, others were legless. Some focused on capturing the essence of “duckness” while others playfully interpreted the concept.

Beyond Individual Creation

The real magic happened when we moved from individual creation to group building. Using the same six bricks we were asked to create something that represented one of our values. Later, in the group, we we asked to use either our creation or create something that would represent our common value.

Suddenly, our diverse approaches became assets rather than oddities. One participants representation of “authenticity” was a perfect support for another’s representation of “growth”. Different representations of “trust and safety” completed our new design.

Through this collaborative process, we weren’t just building with LEGO; we were constructing shared understanding, appreciating different perspectives, and communicating through creation rather than words.

What My Duck Experience Taught Me About Teams

As I reflected on the experience, several insights emerged:

  1. Diversity of thought is invaluable: The wide variety of “ducks” demonstrated how differently we approach the same challenge.
  2. Constraints breed innovation: Limited resources didn’t limit creativity—they enhanced it.
  3. The power of physical thinking: Manipulating physical objects unlocked different thinking patterns than verbal or written exercises would have.
  4. Play is serious business: The playful approach created a safe space for experimentation and risk-taking.
  5. Shared creation builds connection: Building together fostered understanding and appreciation of different approaches.

Next time your team faces a challenge, consider reaching for the LEGO box instead of the whiteboard. You might be surprised by what emerges when hands and minds work together.

The LEGO Serious Play Duck Challenge can be seamlessly integrated into any team development program, workshop, or corporate retreat.
